Why does single-source matter more here?

The most important choice is structural, not geographic: do you hire one sub who both fabricates and erects, or split the scope between a shop and a separate erector? A single-source sub removes the fabricator-to-erector handoff, sequences fabrication to the erection plan, and puts one accountable party on the critical path. In a tight regional market where crews and shop capacity are in demand, that single accountable relationship is worth even more, because you are not trying to align two busy companies across one seam.

How much do local logistics matter?

A lot. Steel is heavy, and where it is fabricated relative to where it is erected drives cost, lead time, and how fast the shop can respond to a field change.

What about coastal coatings?

The Lowcountry is a corrosive environment. Humidity is high year round and salt air reaches well inland, so exposed and exterior steel needs a protective system matched to that exposure. That usually means galvanizing or a multi-coat paint system specified for coastal duty, not a generic shop primer. The mistake is treating all steel the same: interior dry framing and exterior coastal steel are different problems, and the coating spec should say so. Confirm the system against the actual exposure before it leaves the shop, because recoating in the field is slow and expensive.

How do you vet a Carolinas steel sub?

Before you compare price per ton, confirm the fundamentals. A low bid from a sub who cannot self-perform, or whose safety record is weak, is not actually low.

  1. AISC certification. Certified Fabricator and Certified Steel Erector, not just one.
  2. Self-performed erection. Ask directly whether they erect with their own crews or sub it out.
  3. Safety record. Ask for their EMR and OSHA history; steel erection is high-hazard work.
  4. Licensing and bonding. Confirm they are licensed, insured, and bonded in your state (SC, NC, or GA).
  5. Regional experience. Ask for local projects like yours, whether that is a data center, a hotel, or retail.
