Stairs, Railing & Architectural Metals

TMG fabricates and installs egress and feature stairs, IBC-compliant guardrail and handrail, curved and ornamental rail, and fence and gates. Built to IBC, ADA, and OSHA, with CNC plasma detail and in-house tube and pipe fabrication for curved work, across SC, NC, and GA.

Egress + feature metalwork

Stairs and rail that pass inspection and hit the design intent

Stairs and railing carry two jobs at once: they are life-safety egress that has to pass code inspection, and they are finish-exposed metalwork the architect and owner will judge on sight. TMG fabricates both under CSI 05 50 00 and 05 70 00, from concrete-pan egress stairs to mono-stringer feature stairs, and from workhorse guardrail to curved ornamental rail.

Because the same team fabricates the structure these stairs land on, geometry, connections, and embed locations are coordinated from the start. In-house CNC plasma cutting produces custom plate, brackets, and posts, and curved rail is formed to the design radius so it still meets IBC loads. That combination is what lets a stair clear inspection and read as intended.

Code & loads

What code governs guardrail and handrail?

Guards and handrails are engineered to the International Building Code, with ADA and OSHA layered on where they apply. TMG details to these values so the installed rail passes inspection the first time.

RequirementCodeSpec
Guard heightIBC 101542 in minimum at walking surfaces and open sides
Guard loadIBC 1607200 lb concentrated load, any direction, at the top
Guard load (linear)IBC 160750 lb per linear foot applied to the top rail
Handrail heightIBC 101434 in to 38 in above the nosing
AccessibilityADA / ANSI A117.1Graspable handrails, extensions, and clearances
Industrial railOSHA 1910.2942 in guard and rail systems for workplace access

Values reflect common IBC provisions and are confirmed against the project code edition and the authority having jurisdiction.

Scope of work

What TMG fabricates and installs

Stairs
  • Egress pan stairs (concrete-filled treads)
  • Mono-stringer feature stairs
  • Switchback and straight-run egress
  • Landings, stringers, and framing
Railing
  • IBC guardrail and handrail
  • Tube-bent and ornamental rail
  • Cable, picket, and panel infill
  • Wall-mounted and post-mounted rail
Enclosure & detail
  • Steel fence and gates (swing / slide)
  • CNC plasma custom plate and brackets
  • Curved and ornamental rail
  • Architectural trim and screens

Fabrication follows ASTM and AWS D1.1; installed assemblies meet IBC, ADA, and OSHA as applicable. Custom profiles are cut on CNC plasma and fabricated in-house, so feature work does not get farmed out.

FAQ

Frequently asked

What building codes govern steel stairs and railings?

Egress stairs and guards follow the International Building Code. IBC sets guardrail height at 42 inches, handrail height at 34 to 38 inches above the nosing, and a design load of a 200 lb concentrated force plus 50 lb per linear foot on the top rail. ADA and ANSI A117.1 add accessibility rules, and OSHA 1910.29 governs industrial and workplace rail.

What types of stairs does TMG build?

TMG fabricates and installs egress stairs and feature stairs, including pan stairs filled with concrete and mono-stringer stairs for exposed architectural work. Both are detailed to IBC egress geometry and delivered as part of a single-source steel package with the guardrail and handrail that serve them.

Can TMG produce curved and ornamental railing?

Yes. TMG produces smooth curved and ornamental rail from tube and pipe in-house, and CNC plasma cutting handles custom plate, brackets, and posts. That lets TMG deliver finish-exposed rail that meets IBC loads while hitting the architectural intent.

Does TMG install fence and gates?

Yes. TMG fabricates and installs steel fence and gates, from security and screening fence to swing and slide gates, coordinated with the structural and misc metals scope so site enclosure ships on the same schedule as the building steel.

Are TMG railings ADA compliant?

Railings are built to the accessibility requirements that apply to the project, including ADA and ANSI A117.1 rules for graspable handrails, required extensions at the top and bottom of runs, and clearances. Final compliance is confirmed against the approved architectural drawings and the authority having jurisdiction.
