If your project manual calls for AISC Certification in Division 05, you are reading a requirement that quietly does a lot of work: it lets the design team trust the quality of your steel without auditing every shop and crew themselves. Here is what the certification actually verifies, which program covers which scope, and the one provision most GCs miss that can take cost and time off the job.
What AISC Certification is
AISC Certification is a third-party program run by the American Institute of Steel Construction. An independent auditor reviews a fabricator or an erector against a published standard and confirms they operate a documented quality management system. It is not a one-time test. Certified companies are re-audited to keep the certification current, so it reflects an ongoing practice rather than a framed certificate from years ago.
The certification is not about a single weld or a single project. It certifies the system that produces every weld and every project: how work is planned, how procedures are written and followed, how material is tracked, and how inspection catches problems before steel leaves the building.
The governing document is AISC 207, the Standard for Certification Programs. Every category, shop or field, is audited against it, with supplemental requirements layered on for the specific scope. AISC updated the governing requirements effective June 15, 2026, with domestic erector requirements effective October 1, 2025, so a certificate issued under an older edition is worth a question at prequalification.
The programs and categories, matched to scope
AISC runs distinct programs for the shop and the field, and distinct categories inside each. Match the category to the scope you are actually buying.

Two practical consequences fall out of that table. First, “AISC certified” on its own is not an answer. A fabricator certified for buildings is not certified for major bridges, and a shop certification says nothing about who stands the steel. Second, if your project is a high rise, a power house, or a heavy industrial facility, the erector category matters as much as the certification itself.
A fabrication-only shop may hold a Fabricator category alone. An erection-only company may hold CSE alone. A single-source subcontractor that both fabricates and erects needs one from each program to cover the whole package.
What the audit actually verifies
Behind the label, an AISC audit examines the parts of your steel package most likely to cause a problem:
- Quality management. Written procedures, document control, and a defined way to correct nonconformances rather than repeat them.
- Welding. Welding procedure specifications (WPS) and qualification records that govern how load-bearing joints are made. This is where AWS D1.1 lives inside the quality system.
- Material control. Traceability from mill certificate to installed member, so the steel in the frame is the steel the engineer specified.
- Inspection. Defined inspection points and records, so defects are found in the shop where they are cheap to fix rather than in the field where they are not.
- For erectors specifically. Erection safety practices, rigging and equipment control, and how field quality is managed on an active site.
The provision most GCs miss: transferring special inspection
This is the part with money attached, and it rarely comes up at the scope review.
Chapter N of the AISC Specification for Structural Steel Buildings allows special inspection to be transferred from a third-party inspector to a structural steel fabricator or erector who has been approved by the authority having jurisdiction. AISC Certification is a commonly accepted basis for that approval. Where the building official accepts it, those inspections are performed by the company’s own qualified staff instead of a separately retained inspection firm.
The effect on your job is direct: fewer outside inspection hours to schedule and pay for, and fewer trips where a member sits waiting on an inspector before the next pick. It is discretionary, not automatic, so the question to ask early is whether your AHJ accepts it on this project and what documentation they want to see.
Why specs require it
Engineers and owners require AISC Certification because it moves quality risk off their desk. Instead of qualifying each bidder’s shop and crews from scratch, the spec writer can require the certification and let the audit stand in for that review.
For you as the GC, that has a hard practical consequence. On a spec that calls for certification, an uncertified bidder is nonresponsive, no matter how sharp the price. Confirming certification early keeps a disqualified sub off your bid tab, and keeps you from building a number around a bid you cannot actually award.
How to verify a certification
Treat verification as a document check, not a conversation:
- Look it up. AISC publishes a searchable directory of certified companies. Confirm the company is in it.
- Read the category. Confirm the certification category matches your scope, using the table above. Shop certification does not cover erection.
- Check the entity. The legal entity on the certificate must be the entity signing your subcontract. Certification does not transfer between affiliated or related companies.
- Check the date. Certification is maintained through periodic audits and can lapse. Confirm the certificate is current, not historic.
What certification does not tell you
A certified quality system is a real signal, and it is also a narrow one. It does not tell you whether the subcontractor self-performs erection or hands it to a third party, whether their safety record is clean, whether they carry bonding capacity for your package, or whether they will sequence fabrication to your erection plan instead of to their own shop efficiency. Those are the variables that decide whether your frame tops out on schedule.
That is why certification belongs in the vet as one line item rather than the whole vet. Pair it with the ten award questions so you are buying a qualified team and not just a qualified system.
The short version
AISC Certification is an audited answer to one question: does this company run a documented quality system to a published standard? Confirm the program, the category, the entity, and the date. Ask your AHJ whether certification can transfer special inspection on your job. Then keep going, because the questions that predict field performance are the ones the certificate does not answer.
