Steel is the trade that gates every trade behind it. If the frame slips, the slab, the envelope, the MEP rough-in, and the finishes all slip with it. That is why how you buy steel, not just who you buy it from, decides how much schedule risk you carry.
What “single-source” actually means
Single-source steel means one subcontractor both fabricates the steel in the shop and erects it in the field. You sign one contract, coordinate one schedule, and hold one company accountable for the whole package, from shop drawings through the last bolt-up.
The alternative is to split the scope: buy fabrication from a shop, then hire a separate erector to stand the steel. On paper the two prices can look lower. In the field, the seam between them is where jobs lose time.
Why the fabricator-to-erector handoff is the risk
When two companies own the two halves of a steel package, the gap between them becomes yours to manage:
- Sequencing. A separate fabricator ships to its own efficiency, not to the erection plan. Steel shows up in the wrong order and stacks in the yard.
- Field fits. When a connection does not fit, the fabricator blames the erector’s layout and the erector blames the shop’s dimensions. You referee, and the RFI clock runs.
- Two quality chains. Two QA programs, two sets of weld procedures, two inspection trails to reconcile.
- Schedule math. Every coordination gap multiplies on the critical path, because steel is upstream of everything.
How single-source closes the seam

Because the shop and the field answer to the same team, the fabrication schedule is built around the erection plan from day one. When something needs to change in the field, the same company adjusts the shop, often the same day.
When splitting can still make sense
Splitting is not always wrong. If you are self-performing erection with your own union crews, or a project’s fabrication and erection genuinely belong to different specialists, two contracts can be the right call. The point is to price the coordination, not assume it is free.
What to ask a steel sub
- Do you self-perform both fabrication and erection, or sub out one half?
- Whose crews erect the steel, yours or a third party?
- How do you sequence fabrication to the erection plan?
- Who owns weld quality and inspection across shop and field?
If the answer to the first question is “one team,” you have removed the seam before the job starts. That is the case for single-source, and it is how TMG is built.
