When two steel bids come back thousands of dollars apart, the gap is rarely about greed. It is about scope: what each estimator assumed regarding connections, coatings, material, and schedule. Understanding what actually drives fabrication cost lets you read those bids as an estimator does, and compare them on substance rather than on the bottom line alone. The five things that move fabrication cost
Fabrication cost is the sum of several drivers, and any one of them can separate two otherwise similar bids.

Notice that only one of these, tonnage, is about weight. The others are about how much labor and process each ton carries, which is why price per ton alone is a weak way to compare bids.
Why tonnage is only the starting point
Weight sets the floor, not the total. Two packages at the same tonnage can price very differently. A simple, bolted, single-story frame processes quickly. A package with heavy moment connections, stiffeners, built-up members, and tight fit-up carries far more shop labor per ton. When you compare bids, look past the headline weight to the connection design, because that is where the labor, and much of the cost difference, actually lives.
Connections and complexity: where the labor goes
After material, connection complexity is the largest lever on fabrication cost. The design decides how many labor hours each member absorbs:
- Bolted shear connections are the fastest and lowest-labor to fabricate.
- Moment connections require more welding, fit-up, and inspection, adding hours per joint.
- Stiffeners, gussets, and built-up sections multiply the piece count and the welding.
- Tight tolerances and architectural exposure raise finishing and inspection effort.
None of this means complex designs are wrong. It means the connection design, set by the structural engineer, is a cost driver you should understand when you read a bid or value-engineer a frame.
Material market and coatings
The raw steel market sets the price of the base material, and it moves with mill pricing, demand, and availability. A quote reflects the market on the day it is priced, so budget numbers and older bids should be re-verified before you rely on them. Coatings add a separate cost and schedule step: galvanizing or specialty paint means another process and often another vendor, which is why confirming finish requirements early tightens both the price and the lead time.
How a real quote is built
A credible fabrication quote is assembled, not guessed. An estimator combines material, shop labor for cutting, drilling, and welding, coatings, detailing, and delivery, then adjusts for how the connection design and schedule affect labor efficiency. The more complete your drawings and the more realistic your timeline, the less contingency the estimator has to carry, and the tighter the number comes back. Incomplete scope forces assumptions, and assumptions get priced as risk.
Where the fabricator you pick affects cost
The subcontractor model matters too. When fabrication and erection are split between two companies, the coordination between them, the reworks at the handoff, and the change-order exposure at fit-up all carry cost that does not show on the fabrication bid line.
