Of all the small items in a steel package, embeds and anchor bolts cause the most field pain relative to their size. They are cheap to fabricate and easy to install, yet a single missing one can idle an erection crew for days. The reason is not difficulty. It is ownership.

What are embeds and anchor bolts, and why do they matter?

Embeds are steel plates, angles, or assemblies cast into concrete so that steel can be attached to it later, by weld or bolt. Anchor bolts are the cast-in bolts that receive column base plates. Both are set while the concrete is still formed, long before any steel shows up on site.

That timing is the whole issue. The embed is a steel item, designed by the steel detailer and connected to by the frame, but it is physically placed by the concrete crew during the pour. Steel depends on it, concrete installs it, and the coordination between those two facts is where jobs get hurt.

Why are embeds a classic scope gap?

The split between who owns and who installs creates a predictable gap:

  • The steel sub assumes the concrete crew will set embeds and bolts.
  • The concrete sub assumes the steel sub will supply and locate them.
  • The embed drawing lives in the steel package, but the schedule that matters is the concrete pour.
  • Templates and setting plans are an afterthought, so location tolerance drifts.

When those assumptions collide, an embed is missing, in the wrong place, or out of tolerance. This is the same distribution problem that makes all of miscellaneous metals a scope gap, concentrated into the one item that steel literally cannot proceed without.

What does a missed embed actually cost?

The cost is rarely the plate. It is the schedule. When an embed is missing or a bolt pattern is out of tolerance, erection stops at that connection while a fix is engineered.

Every one of those is a change order and, worse, a hold on the critical path. Steel gates the trades behind it, so an embed delay ripples into the slab, envelope, and MEP.

Who should own embeds, and how is it done right?

The steel subcontractor should own embeds end to end: detail them, supply them, and coordinate their placement with the concrete crew. Done right, that means:

  1. Early detailing. Embeds and anchor bolts are detailed and released ahead of the pours that need them, not with the rest of the steel.
  2. Setting plans and templates. The steel sub hands the concrete crew clear location drawings and, for anchor bolts, physical templates that lock the pattern.
  3. Pre-pour coordination. Embeds are reviewed against the concrete schedule so the right items are on site before each pour.
  4. A field check. Locations are verified before concrete is placed, when a fix still costs minutes instead of days.

This is one of the strongest arguments for single-source steel. When the same company fabricates and erects, they own the embed from drawing to connection, and they have every incentive to get it right, because they are the crew that has to land steel on it.
